One of the worst things about a fire is the fact that it can spread throughout a building. This can put people at risk even if they are not in the area where the fire originates. The awful thing about this is these injuries and deaths are preventable. Trident Fire Protection & Training can help with this. We provide compartmentation surveys to inspect compartments within a building. This can determine how effectively you can limit the spread of fire and smoke.

Five parts

Compartmentation surveysEvery effective fire protection strategy should include five important parts.

Firstly, you need to think about detection. There should be systems in place such as smoke and fire alarms that will trigger as soon as they detect a problem. They need to be in the right locations to give people as much warning as possible.

Secondly, there should be suppression systems where possible. This should be things like sprinklers that can activate automatically when there is a fire. Other fire fighting equipment such as extinguishers and blankets must also be available.

Containment is one of the most important things here. A fire is less likely to spread out of control and put lives in other parts of a property at risk if you have measures in place to contain it. What you need to do here is break up the building into compartments. Fire walls, ceilings, floors, doors, and dampers can stop fires and smoke from spreading from the point of origin for a period of time. That can save lots of lives.

The next part of a strategy is evacuation. There should be a proper plan in place that people are aware of so they know what to do if there is a fire. It should include fire escape routes with clear signage.

Finally is prevention. Injury and death is less likely if you put more effort into preventing fires from happening in the first place. The key to this is to take care with gas and electrical equipment, as well as anything else that could start a fire.

Do you need compartmentation surveys?

The risk of fires spreading from the point of origin and putting other people in harm’s way is higher in certain properties. The riskiest ones are blocks of flats and apartments. There are also more risks in care homes, office blocks, and even airports. The risk is highest when there are no compartmentation measures in place.

Trident Fire Protection & Training can provide compartmentation surveys for an array of clients. We support people in the domestic, commercial, and public sectors. When we do a survey we check all fire proofing carefully and provide clear recommendations.
